IRISH BORDER IDEAS OFFER NO ANSWERS – YET

The UK continues to search for a solution to the Irish border problem. Theresa May’s latest suggestion – following the model of the US and Canada – was dismissed by the Irish prime minister, and the lack of detailed proposals is becoming a greater concern as Brexit looms.

Only time will tell how the UK and Ireland will settle the border issue. Until then, many businesses are unable to plan for the future without an agreement in place, from airlines scheduling flights to businesses budgeting for customs costs.

WILL TRUMP’S TARIFFS START A TRADE WAR?

Trump’s proposed tariffs are making waves, raising the possibility of a trade war – first with China, and now with the EU. The 10 per cent tariff on aluminium and 25 per cent tariff on steel imports have already caused major reverberations for international business.

With trade retaliation on the table by China and the EU, the effects of the proposed metal tariffs could spread beyond price increases and disruptions in businesses’ aluminium and steel supplies, extending to a wide range of countries and industries.

We are still awaiting official action, but if the proposed tariffs become policy, businesses around the world are sure to feel their impact.

In an increasingly globalised world, misdemeanours at any outpost of an institution can damage a brand – as Oxfam is currently experiencing first hand.
